Milan

One of the largest cities in Italy is Milan. It is located in the plains of Lombardy. Its worldwide glory is connected with design and fashion; it is even called the world capital of fashion. The town is crossed by two rivers – Olona and Lambro and by one creek – Seveso. The region of Milan was inhabited as early as around 400 BC when the Celtic Insubres lived there. Nowadays Milan is one of the most important artistic centres of the north part of Italy. In Milan tourists can see the second largest church in Italy – the Duomo, which is also the third in the world, and the largest in the world collection of marble statues. On top of the spire is the golden Madonna statue, visible from long distance, la Madunina (the little Madonna), the symbol of Milan. Teatro alla Scala (La Scala) is famous all over the world not only for opera goers. A large covered arcade – the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, links the Teatro alla Scala with the Duomo’s piazza. In the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie visitors can enjoy one of the most famous Leonardo da Vinci’s paintings – The Last Supper (L’ultima cena or II cenacolo). Other monuments worth visiting are the Castello Sforzesco and the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio. During the late 18th and 19th Century Milan was a centre of intellectual life and literature workers. Nowadays a significant architectural and urban design renaissance occurs in Milan. Entire quarters are being reconstructed; many new projects are on the way. The typical for Milan and its region cuisine is worth tasting. It includes “cotoletta alla Milanese” which is a breaded veal (you can use also pork and turkey) cutlet pan-fried in butter.
